CONNECTING WITH THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

BIDHOLI VILLAGE VISIT- 12-11-2022

I rarely leave campus but every time I do, I am mesmerised by the beauty I am surrounded by. The beauty in the hills, in the people, in the ecosystem so many of us take for granted. When we went on our community outreach programme which will inevitably take the form of a coffee table book and an application, I was excited. It was good to meet the people who call this place home. They have seen their village change as a direct result of the creation of our university. I think it is essential to directly contribute to their well-being. Our neighbourhood is our responsibility especially because our presence has brought irreversible changes to the landscape for the better and the worse. Speaking to the people in person gave us the insight we needed in order to create a catalogue that is authentic and accurate. Connecting with the community exposed us to different lives and stories about the place we knew little about but lived in. It was as if these conversations made me appreciate Bidholi more. We met the Sarphanch and saw her administrative adeptness. She seemed like a person well versed in her craft. She was directly involved in fixing roads in the surrounding area despite her limited budget.

We also met other members of the sabha who were involved in organisations like the Mahila mandal and Yuva mandal. Such groups empower the residents to take care of each other and carry out activities like Pujas by pooling resources. We were also given a tour of the village and we visited their sacred temple. We met children who studied in the local primary school. Throughout the whole trip, I felt like the world deserves to know of a place in what most people would consider is the middle of nowhere. I just hope our actions improve the lives of the people in tangible ways in the near future.
